SUMMARY:Nepal’s Gen-Z Protests: A Marxian Lens on a Generation’s Outrage
DESCRIPTION:DATE: Saturday\, November 8\, 2025 \nTIME:\n10:00 AM Central Standard Time\n 9:30 PM India Standard Time\n 8:00 AM Pacific Standard Time\n 11:00 AM Eastern Standard Time\n 5:00 PM Central European Time \nNews and Letters Committees invites you to an online discussion on\nNepal’s Gen-Z Protests:\nA Marxian Lens on a Generation’s Outrage \nGen-Z youth protesting in Chitwan\, Nepal\, on September 8. Photo: हिमाल सुवेदी\, CC0 1.0 \nNepal’s 2025 Gen-Z protests were more than political unrest\, they reflected a generation’s deep frustration with economic\, social\, and political marginalization. Young Nepalis\, educated yet unemployed\, connected yet censored\, and politically sidelined\, took to the streets not just over government corruption or social media restrictions\, but because they felt systematically excluded from the opportunities that shape their future. The eruption was spontaneous\, but it revealed long-standing structural contradictions. \nRevolutions are possible in our time. How can we make them permanent? How can we stop them from transforming into their opposite? \nPiyush Chaudhary\, an undergraduate researcher interested in governance\, politics\, and international relations\, will lead off the discussion. \nFor more information\, see https://newsandletters.org/nepals-gen-z-protests-a-marxian-lens-on-a-generations-outrage/ \nContact News and Letters Committees for a zoom link: arise@newsandletters.org

SUMMARY:Online meeting: War in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:News and Letters Committees invites you to a zoom meeting on: \nPutin’s brutal war in Ukraine puts the future of humanity in doubt\nThe bravery of Ukrainians echoed in Russia\, where protesters in over 50 cities denounced the war\, knowing that they risked arrest\, blacklisting\, even torture and death\, which Putin’s regime has often dealt to dissidents. At the war’s start over 1\,700 “No to War” protesters were arrested as the open defiance of the regime spread to many other forms of expression…. \nWithin days over 6\,000 were arrested. By March 8 the number rose to 13\,500. Many more signed open letters against the war: 6\,000 medical workers\, 3\,400 architects and engineers\, 500 teachers\, 1\,500 graduates of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations. A Russian feminist group announced International Women’s Day would be a day of protest against the war…. \nPutin’s Russian imperialism is a manifestation of a desperate capitalist system that can’t provide for its population….The ultimate currency now is militarism. The means of total destruction are much greater than at the time of the global capitalist collapse of the 1930s Great Depression and its deglobalization\, which led to the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust. The scale of Putin’s brutality toward a neighboring country revives this gruesome memory. \n\nDiscussion following a talk by Ron Kelch\, author of “Putin’s brutal war in Ukraine puts the future of humanity in doubt” in the current issue of News & Letters \nTo join the zoom meeting go to: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/83251777022?pwd=QXI1TU5JTUt6VWt1a25yam5lU0tnUT09 \nMeeting ID: 832 5177 7022  Passcode: 867321 \nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kGvUQvdAP \n312-431-8242 / arise@newsandletters.org / www.newsandletters.org

SUMMARY:Online event: Meeting the challenges of this year of pandemic\, climate\, economic\, and political disasters
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to a discussion of News and Letters Committees’ “Call for Convention”\nto work out perspectives for 2021-2022\nᏜ What should a revolutionary group do to meet the challenges of the next year? \nᏜ How will the philosophy of Marxist-Humanism impact these decisions? \nᏜ How will we meet the challenges arising from the creativity of the movements from practice—from the Black movement for freedom\, the struggle for women’s liberation\, LGBTQI+ people\, to disability rights and more? \nFrom the “Call”: “The pandemic and the climate and ecological crisis struck at a time when the world capitalist system had shown itself unable to extricate itself from a prolonged economic slump\, and they deepened it. This is not likely to be vanquished by the temporary stimulus passed by Congress under the Trump and Biden administrations\, despite the ‘sugar rush’ recovery. That very weakness and the unrest brewing also underlies the system’s enabling of fascist movements\, including scapegoating of immigrants or people from other countries for the pandemic and environmental problems…. \n“Despite the far right’s setback in the last elections\, their pernicious power is seen in everything from the Supreme Court’s recent racist decisions on voting rights to the raft of ultra-reactionary laws being passed in nearly half the states. Above all\, it is seen in the way the Jan. 6 insurrection and failed coup is being treated as yesterday’s news….They are unable even to pass a law to set up an independent commission to investigate Jan. 6\, let alone pass sweeping bills protecting voting rights and labor organizing…. \n“All of this is occurring not just despite but because of the massive revolt that tore through the land in 2020\, bringing to the fore a new revolutionary generation led by the youth\, particularly the Black youth\, particularly women of color and Trans\, Two-Spirit and Genderqueer people.” \nThe “Call” in its entirety can be found at https://newsandletters.org/call-for-convention-2021/\nDATE: Thursday\, August 12\nTIME: 7:30 PM Central Time \nTo find out how to sign on to the free video meeting contact\nNews and Letters Committees for connection details at arise@newsandletters.org

SUMMARY:Chicago meeting: From Iraq to Mexico to the U.S.\, women’s movements reach for new global stage
DESCRIPTION:WHEN: Wednesday\, March 11\, 2020\, 6:30 PM\nWHERE: News and Letters Library\, 228 S. Wabash\, Room 230\, Chicago \nSome of the hundreds of women and their men supporters who marched on Feb. 14\, 2020\, in Tahrir Square in Baghdad\, Iraq. Photo by Bilal Majid. \nWhat has become clear in 2020 is the global nature of the women’s movements. It is a new stage which has announced itself by the international fight against femicide; the Women’s Marches in the U.S. and worldwide that continue to draw in new women three years after they began\, despite the contradictions evident in its leadership; and by the National Women’s Meetings in Latin America\, also called Encuentros\, which have been gathering yearly since 1985 and now draw up to 90\,000 participants. \nWhat else announces the new moment the women’s liberation movement has reached is women’s participation in revolutions and in work to save the planet; their leadership in actions to drive neo-fascists out of power from India’s Narendra Modi to Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil and to Donald Trump of the U.S.; and the now-too-numerous-to-count demonstrations that burst forth over issues as diverse as the right of women to enter Hindu temples in India to the demand for legal abortion in Poland and Argentina. \n♀ How has International Women’s Day 2020 furthered this new global stage and can it be sustained and deepened? \n♀ What contribution does Marxist-Humanism make to this struggle? \nSpeaker\, Terry Moon\, feminist activist and writer\, “Woman as Reason” columnist\, News & Letters. Followed by free and open discussion. \n312-431-8242 /www.newsandletters.org / arise@newsand letters.org
