Europe at the Crossroads: From the Brexit Vote to the Failed Coup in Turkey
In the United Kingdom, escalating violence against immigrants in England has followed the vote to leave the European Union. In Turkey, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has extended a state of emergency as an opportunity to dismiss and arrest hundreds of thousands of those he considers opponents after the military coup that opposition parties joined in thwarting. From one end of Europe to the other, the rise of reactionary nationalist forces threatens even more violence and instability, with uneasy parallels to the resurgence of the far right in the U.S.
