Oakland, Cal.—Friday, Sept. 23, Youth vs. Apocalypse joined the international Fridays for Future Climate Strike. Hundreds of youth were saying “No to coal! Yes to life!”
Oakland has been fighting for years to stop coal mined in Utah from being transported through the Port of Oakland. Youth are demanding climate reparations not as charity but a transformative justice process, which follows demands from Indigenous, Black, anti-patriarchal and diverse marginalized communities to get their lands back and resources for communities most affected by the climate crisis.
There were lots of hand-drawn signs, some from very young people, relaying many messages: “Save the earth!”; “We’re missing our lessons to teach the world”; “March now or swim later”; “Money won’t matter when we are dead”; “You can’t buy a clean earth”; “No to smoke! Yes to health!”; “I speak for the trees”…
