Oakland, Cal.—The walkout at the 14th and Jackson Street McDonald’s near downtown Oakland was part of a Dec. 5 national day of action organized by fast food workers from coast to coast. Only two or three employees stayed behind. After 40 minutes one more worker, a middle-aged Latina, walked out to cheers from 100 co-workers and supporters rallying in the parking lot. She and many low-wage earners belie the corporate claim that fast food workers are just youngsters looking for spending money or entry level jobs before a professional career.
