News and Letters Committees office damaged

August 29, 2020

From the September-October 2020 issue of News & Letters

In the recent uprisings against racist police murders and brutality against Black people, the store on the first floor of the building where the News and Letters Committees office is located was burned. A result of putting out the fire was flooding in our storeroom and smoke damage to our office. We lost many books, pamphlets, newspapers, and more. We need your help to recover.

Raya Dunayevskaya

The attitude of News and Letters Committees to finances stems from a philosophy of organization which recognizes that we need money, but gives only the barest necessary concessions to capitalist financial practices and attitudes. Marxist-Humanist philosophy regarding finances centers on the human relationships among the organization, members, friends, co-thinkers and even those with differing views.

Dues, pledges, fundraisers, literature sales, subscriptions and individual donations are the sole source of our income. The people who provide do so freely. We receive no government, corporate, or foundation grants.

In the capitalist economy, a sale is an end and ideally a means to hook the victim into more purchases. To Marxist-Humanists, in contrast, the sale of a subscription is not just a means to an end, it is a new beginning and hopefully will grow into a new kind of human relationship. It provides a year’s worth of news, analysis, dialogue and Marxist-Humanist philosophy for which there is no substitute. Most importantly, the newspaper is the beginning of a dialogue.

Readers have an ongoing opportunity to read and discuss articles, write their own responses or report on their discussions.

Last but not least, a subscription provides insight into our organizational philosophy. From the prominence of Raya Dunayevskaya’s column to Readers’ Views, to the wide range of participant authors, to our “Who We Are” statement and, most uniquely, to our Draft Perspectives, we tell people what we stand for.

A subscription to News & Letters is a year-long opportunity to collectively develop the ideas and practice of freedom.

  1. When you donate to News and Letters Committees, you will NOT be harassed, badgered, browbeaten, pestered or annoyed with repeated requests for more, More and MORE, day after day, week after week, month after month! You will be met with RESPECT for your support of Marxist-Humanism. I wish other worthy causes would adopt the same financial philosophy.
