Oakland, Calif.—Hundreds of people marked this Jan. 20 by almost spontaneous events and marches in many Oakland neighborhoods. Several hundred came to a march at Lake Merritt, one of at least three different events that day just in this one location expressing solidarity with Minneapolis as well as immigrants here.
A popular chant was “No hate, no fear, immigrants are welcome here.” One of my favorite signs was “Revolution,” with the letters “evol” written backwards so it read “love.”
Because many of those events were called just a few hours earlier, one of the demonstrators said, “It’s a terrible time, but the response shows we are getting better organized.”

Power to the people of mighty Oakland!
I lived at Lake Merritt Lodge 1979-1980.
You were my neighbors then, now you are my favorite people!
